ADMISSION FAQ
JLSA accepts students whose educational and social needs can best be met in our setting. Every child deserves an educational setting that will best enable them to thrive, but not one educational setting can serve them all. We enroll students who can reach their greatest success with our style, educational approach and can be served with our current resources. We are structured to enroll students who are eager learners, inclusive and kind, and can benefit from a big school experience. At times, we do work with some with children who need additional support greater than our teacher to student ratio. In those cases we offer additional support options.
Q. What qualities do students hold that help them to be a good fit at JLSA?
A. Students who have an open mind, are eager to learn regardless of any learning differences, are gentle hearted and have families that share our philosophy are a great match. We have students who begin taking college high school credit classes, and others are vocationally geared. We benefit from seeing a well rounded and dedicated student on the right path for themselves.
Q. What time does the school day start and end?
A. While the school day does not begin officially until 8:55 a.m., children may arrive as early as 8:30 a.m. for early bird drop off. There is no fee for this service. The school day ends at 2:00 p.m., with child pickup time until 2:15 p.m.

A. We are have student in grades K – 12. We generally prefer to enroll students by age 14 years or earlier.
Q. What are the opportunities for visiting the school?
A. JLSA requires a school visit by the parents at the very beginning of the admissions process. This can be done by attendance by scheduling a visit on a monthly tour. Contact the school at (919) 387-9440 to schedule a visit. After the initial visit to the school, there will also be an independent two day visit for prospective students to truly experience the school environment.
Q. How do you make your admissions decisions?
A. Each prospective student’s application & student information form, and other pertinent information will be reviewed by staff. Basic assessments are performed by JLSA staff during the admission process. A variety of factors are used in consideration of admission, but perhaps none as important as the experience of spending time with the child as they visit the school for two days. It is our goal that the staff and families composing the school community will mirror the diversity of the community in which we live. Acceptance to the school is in no way based on race, religion, gender, gender identity, handicapping conditions, or socio-economic status.
We welcome families in all their diversity.
Q. Once your child is a JLSA student, do you have to re-apply each year?
A. No. Applications are not required each year. JLSA teachers and administrators do evaluate the progress and participation of each student to determine if a contract for enrollment will be offered for the following school year. Contracts are extended in February of each school year.
